Grist is seeking work from both emerging and established writers whose work is of high literary quality and value. We value poetry, fiction, and non-fiction that is aware of the history that has come before it. While we welcome all styles, we seek experimentation that shows an awareness of what is being subverted and why.
We read both postal and online submissions between August 15 and April 15. Submissions received over the summer will be recycled. Simultaneous submissions are acceptable as long as we are immediately notified if the piece has been accepted elsewhere. Please do not mix genres in the same submission. We do not consider previously published work. Please retain a copy of your work as we cannot be responsible for lost or damaged submissions.
The average response time is 2-4 months. If you have not received a response after 4 months (excluding the summer months), send a query to your genre's editor.
Submissions will be considered for publication in both the print and online version of the journal, but publication on the website does not ensure print publication. Pay is two contributor copies plus reduced cost on additional copies.
Please send the following:
Fiction: Experimental or traditional forms. 20,000 words max.
Poetry: Avante-garde, free-verse, traditional. Submit 3-6 poems.
Non-fiction: While we remain committed to the tradition of publishing craft essays, the staff at Grist is now also considering for publication nonfiction essays, including memoir, lyric essays, short shorts, and experimental forms. We are, however, unable to read submissions of more than 7,000 words.
We strongly prefer and encourage you to submit work via our online submissions manager. Click the link to submit your work to us via Submishmash.
Postal submissions may be sent to:
